How Tire and Wheel Width Are Measured

A primary source of confusion in tire fitment is comparing nominal tire width with nominal wheel width as if they were measured across identical boundaries. They are not:

  • Tire Section Width: Defined under international standards (such as TRA and ETRTO) as the linear distance between the outermost points of the sidewalls of an inflated, unloaded tire, measured on a designated measuring rim.
  • Nominal Wheel Width: Measured strictly between the inner bead seat surfaces inside the rim flanges where the tire beads seat. It does not include the outer rim flange thickness, which adds approximately 0.5 inches per side (1.0 inch total overall rim width).

What Is Measuring Rim Width?

When a tire manufacturer publishes a tire’s specifications (such as an 8.86-inch section width for a 225/40R18), that measurement is taken with the tire mounted on a standardized measuring rim (typically 8.0 inches for a 225/40R18).

When the tire is mounted on a wheel wider or narrower than the measuring rim, its mounted section width changes:

As an industry sizing approximation, every 0.5-inch change in wheel rim width relative to the measuring rim alters the mounted tire section width by approximately 0.2 inches (5 mm). For example, if a specific 225/40R18 tire uses an 8.0-inch measuring rim and its published approved rim-width range includes a 9.0-inch wheel, this rule of thumb would estimate about a 0.4-inch (10 mm) increase in mounted section width.

This rule of thumb should be used only for rim widths within the tire’s applicable approved range; it should not be extrapolated to out-of-range stretch fitments. It is an approximate geometric estimate relative to the measuring rim, not an indicator of fitment approval or safety.
